Senior Bowl: South Practice – Day Three

Joey MbuThe South team’s third day of practice was cut short but there were still plenty of opportunities to see players make impact plays. Still, this will be an abridged version of the final day of practice for the Senior Bowl South team.

STOCK UP

DT Joey Mbu, Houston: Joey Mbu has enjoyed a very solid week but today was clearly the cherry on top of the Sunday, as the Houston Cougar was creating havoc on multiple plays and on one play rocked the whole interior offensive line in on a run play where he flattened Dillon Day. Mbu has extremely quick feet, he utilizes a variety of pass rushing moves and plays as if his hair was on fire. Mbu was already in the 3rd-4th round area but his arrow is clearly pointed upward going into the game Saturday.

RB Cameron Artis-Payne, Auburn: Cameron Artis-Payne has proven that he has the quick twitch stopping and starting ability that it takes to break plays open. He gathers so quickly and is able to use his great balance and speed in his route running as well. Artis-Payne did drop a pass today but was still able to beat out Terrance Plummer on the play to get open by a 3-yard clearance. The Auburn back has a chance to make a similar impact to that of his former teammate Tre Mason as a complimentary back that has a chance to develop into much more with time.

CB Kevin White, TCU: White has been extremely physical with his press in drills and his man coverage in red zone drills has been outstanding with his anticipation and ability to shadow his receiver. Talking to his South teammates at wide receiver two different players have commented that Kevin White is the toughest corner they have played this week. White has parlayed a terrific senior season into a very fruitful off-season and if he tests out well at the combine, he’ll likely find his way into the Top-100 picks in April.

C Reese Dismukes, Auburn: Dismukes is a four year starter and a technically sound player that won a lot of games for the Tigers and helped turn the tide for the Auburn offense. His understanding of angles and zone concepts will be an asset when he makes his transition but his toughness/durability can’t be matched at the position. He is more of a system player that specialized as a shotgun snapper and might take a little time before he develops but there’s a very high floor with this guy. While he’s no first rounder, Dismukes is making a case for himself to be a day two option for teams in need of a quality pivot man.

DE/OLB Lynden Trail, Norfolk State: Trail is making a repeat appearance in my practice reports due to another terrific practice, as the former Florida recruit has improved each day here at the Senior Bowl. Trail worked in drills and caught a touchdown and also made an interception later in the session. He is a freak of nature athlete that is still just scratching the surface of his potential. Lynden Trail can’t help but be noticed wherever he goes but on this large national stage, he’s shown that he belongs with the best competition.
