Senior Bowl: South Practice – Day One

Cody PrewittSouth practice was a well run and extremely well attended session with not only Nick Saban showing up to the Senior Bowl crowd’s delight, but there were also a few players that helped themselves during the day.

STOCK UP

OT Ty Sambrillo, Colorado State: Sambrillo entered this event as a bonafied Top-50 pick but after day one, it’s starting to become a reality that he’s a first round talent. The fifth year senior put on a display of physical football and he showed that he belongs with the big conference players because he is one of the best tackles in the nation. Sambrillo pancaked Markus Golden in the one on one pit drills and later in practice during the scrimmage portion, he crack back blocked Preston Smith on a play action pass opposite side of the bootleg. This guy has the size and strength but he’s showing everybody here that he understands the game and has the perfect temperament for this vocation.

QB Garrett Grayson, Colorado State: Grayson did a nice job spinning the football, as the kid has the ability to throw a rope and does a great job anticipating his receivers. Granted, Grayson looked like Joe Montana compared to Blake Sims but regardless of any other quarterback in attendance, the Colorado State product was able to show off a compact release that came out quick and was accurate. Outside of a few communication breakdowns between his receivers, Grayson had the best practice of any quarterback in Mobile thus far and should be able to build on that throughout the week.

S Cody Prewitt, Ole Miss: This kid is a ball hawk that has a reputation as a leader on and off the field but today he also showed very fluid movements, terrific anticipation and the football IQ that talent evaluators crave. Prewitt was able to disrupt a number of plays in one on ones and also had an interception that he returned for a good thirty yards. Prewitt has a chance to elevate his stock in a safety class that isn’t terribly deep.

STOCK DOWN

QB Blake Sims, Alabama: Sims famously led Alabama into the college football playoff after a miracle Senior season but he’s more of the product of a system and the team around him, as the Alabama passer looked completely out of sorts in day. The number of overthrows by Sims was beyond count and the ill timed passes on crossing patterns and underneath routes was maddening. Prehaps one of the most bothersome factors of what Sims displayed today was a tendency to begin his drop back even before the ball is snapped, leading to an even more awkward drop back. It is to be hoped that Sims can rebound from a terrible day but we’re not holding our breath.
