Senior Bowl: North Practice – Day Three

Ty MontgomeryToday’s north practice was a productive session that featured even more scrimmage situations and some drill settings that highlighted the players talents but by and large it was a bit of a truncated version of Tuesday and Wednesday’s major events. Therefore, I’m posting a combination of practices standouts as well a look at some that took advantage the whole Senior Bowl week.

STOCK UP

OG Laken Tomlinson, Duke: Tomlinson arrived at Duke via Jamaica by way of Chicago and originally moved to America with goals of being a doctor but the gridiron superimposed and found him. A dedicated student, Tomlinson attention to detail is abundantly clear not only in his play but in his preparation as well. The Duke Bluedevil has been in constant communication with his fellow linemen like TJ Clemmings about how to react to certain combinations and executing particular schemes. Tomlinson is already one of the top rated guards in the country but he might have elevated his stock into the 2nd or 3rd round after holding his own all week against the likes of Danny Shelton of Washington and Carl Davis of Iowa.

WR Ty Montgomery, Stanford: This pro-ready receiver has proven that his success and impact at Stanford will transfer directly over to the next level. He offers added value as an ace kick returner and a player that won’t require a ton of work to become an impact receiver. He has been impressive as in scrimmages with more of the heavy action, as the Cardinal was able to haul in a pass in goal-line situation and barreled through traffic for a touchdown. Montgomery will hit the ground running at the next level and although he was already in the conversation for the Top-100, that has now improved to the Top-50 after a strong week of winning matchups and displaying his athleticism.

RB David Cobb, Minnesota: The Gophers’ all-time single season rusher has enjoyed a fine week with some of the best pass blocking displayed by any back here in Mobile, which is an all too crucial aspect in today’s pass-heavy league. Cobb can fit in almost any scheme thanks to his blocking, receiving and power running but he’s not going to run away from an NFL defensive back. Regardless, Cobb could carve out a significant role on a team’s committee as third down option that makes for a very nice upside selection. The bottom line is that David Cobb’s versatility and polish have allowed him to hike up into the upper portion of the third day.

TE Nick Boyle, Delaware: Nick Boyle has just had a solid week with the physicality he displayed in blocking drills as well as in the scrimmages and while he started off the first practice with a few drops, he has improved each and every single day and has really built a solid week. You can hear when Boyle hits somebody out on the field and he’s done such a good job in the running game, walling off defenders and opening lanes. While Boyle may not be a plus player or factor into either of the first two days of the draft, day three is now a possibility for this traditional two way tight end that has blocking ability to go along with a great skill set for receiving.

LB Jordan Hicks, Texas: Hicks was a highly sought after prep prospect that has played through an injury riddled career but is finally healthy and appears to be turning the corner as well as picking up pro schemes quickly. Hicks showed edge discipline, containing the run on the outside and anticipation to maintain his position before he attacks out in coverage. The Texas Longhorn picked off a Sean Mannion pass in this practice and has shown very quick feet and change of direction throughout the week.
