Senior Bowl: North Practice – Day One

DannySheltonNorth practice on Day One of the Senior Bowl was led by the Titans coaching staff and it featured a number of standouts that have improved their draft stock immensely.

STOCK UP

TE Ben Koyack Notre Dame: Koyack was a staple of the North practice with an insane amount of targets during the session and a fine display of hands catching. Koyack not only understands how to find holes in coverage and manipulate mismatches, but he also factors into the running game as a legitimate Y-End that can play two ways. Koyack will likely lead the North Team in receiving during the actual game with the Titans game plan and the roster’s quarterbacks tendencies to checkdown. Koyack is a true hands catcher and should have upped his stock significantly after today’s excellent practice session.

LB Hayes Pullard, USC: Hayes Pullard shined during day one with his ability to see plays before they happen and blow plays up before they develop. Twice during the session, Pullard had to let the runner pass instead of crushing the ball carrier in drills. In scrimmage Pullard knocked Chris Jasper on his butt during an inside run and blew that play up. The guys just flies to the football, he was a four year starter and a two time team captain and there’s no doubt that the NFL team that is lucky enough to select him will be markedly improved as a direct result.

OT TJ Clemmings, Pittsburgh: Clemmings came into this event with talent evaluators having high expectations but it is fair to say that the former defensive linemen has more than met them. TJ fires off the football and flattens backers at the second level. He has an outstanding build with not only the 85′ 1/4″ wingspan but a well developed lower half that allows him to shoot out of his stance and shadow pass rushers on the edge. It’s an absolute certainty that Clemmings is a first round talent but he’s staring right at the Top-10 and should continue to solidify that status going forward.

OT Trent Brown, Florida: Trent Brown flat out won the weigh-in with the longest wingspan on any roster at 86′ 1/2″ arms and he registered as the tallest player at the event at 6’8 1/2″. Brown isn’t just the first player off the bus but he’s also a player that has the explosiveness and athleticism to fire off the line in the running game as well as backpedal into a pass rusher’s way. Trent Brown has terrific base strength, the ability to wall off defenders in the run game and the length to develop into a prototype left tackle if everything pans out.

Honorable Mentioned – TE Casey Pierce, Kent State: Casey was a having a nice practice until about midway through the session when he snagged an unbelievable one-handed catch with a linebacker draped all over him. Pierce has not only proved himself worthy of the invite to Mobile, but he has also shown that he’s more than a system player and has a set of hands that could make the difference.

STOCK DOWN

QB Sean Mannion, Oregon State: Mannion has a lot of potential to develop into a long-term NFL passer with his appealing prototype height/length and the starting experience he has under his belt but he has a few issues to work out before any of that happens. He has a labored delivery that is a bit too elongated and will tip defenders off to go along with a some accuracy issues outside the hashes. None of the North team quarterbacks can claim to have had a good day but Mannion had a few too many worm burners and overthrows to go unnoticed.
