Senior Bowl: Day Three (North)

The final day of practices in Mobile for the Senior Bowl are in the books. They featured two outdoor practices, well one full practice for the North team and a half practice for the South team.

The North team took in a full session with the Raiders coaching staff and they really appear to be in line to feature a lot of running plays with Dexter Williams, short chain movers to the tight ends and they are going to get the ball into Andy Isabella’s hands as many times as they can in this game.

There was a small skirmish that was hoped to escalate into a fight but nothing more than some spirited debate between a two fellow pit monsters. Dalton Risner and Zach Allen appeared to be the culprits.

IMPRESSIVE

WR Terry McLaurin, Ohio State – The guy just keeps showing up when called upon. He’s a smooth route runner, he gets after it at practice and he’s communicating with his teammates and coaches. There’s too much to go on about with McLaurin and I know he is a repeat from day one but the kid has been such a phenomenal practice participant as well as flat out talent, that he has to be included here. He is catching passes thrown behind him, he’s torching corners on routes and he’s making the difference in special teams drills. He has garnered extra attention from coach Gruden and if there’s a player that has put himself on the map via this event, it’s McLaurin. He might be a Top-100 pick, he might not, but there’s simply too much to like about this kid and the way he goes about his business.

WR Jakobi Meyers, North Carolina State – He has been up and down the field all week with some terrific grabs in traffic as well as away from his body. Meyers finds a way to take plays deep, he took a post the distance and ran away from everybody after the catch on day one but he also got open consistently against multiple defenders day three. The after the catch ability is there, it isn’t flashy but he’s more than capable. He made a great decision coming out early and he’s proven that he belongs among the top names in this draft class after his strong performance today as well as the practice week.

TE Drew Sample, Washington – There’s a lot to like about this guy, especially considering some of the success of his predecessor at the program (Will Dissly) had for the Seahawks last year. Drew Sample profiles as a very similar player, a big wide body traditional Y-End that gets after it in the running game and is no slouch catching passes. He is a natural hands catcher, Sample plucks that thing out of the air and he’s a tough looking sob as a run blocker. Sample is a versatile player that may have solidified his status as a draftable prospect with developmental value this week.

STATUS QUO

RB Dexter Williams, Notre Dame – It’s so difficult to gauge where exactly a running back is at an all star event like this but there’s no question that Williams is a feature player in the game plan. His burst, timing and top end speed flash out but he also has some wiggle to him, you just worry about how many carries he can take and how his ability as a pass blocker will translate. He didn’t have a lot of good reps in pass pro but he still showed that he knows how to do what Notre Dame asked him to do and that’s hit the hole hard, then run to daylight.

TE Tommy Sweeney, Boston College – Sweeney is another tight end that enjoyed a solid day of work. He’s a little stiff and didn’t appreciate how many camera people were around during drills but he’s a competitive blocker along with being a nasty fifty-fifty ball high point man. Sweeney will never be a Travis Kelce type of glorified slot tight end but he might have a little Jessie James to type of run in the league if he plays his cards right. Sweeney hass done nothing but help his cause this week, he enjoyed a fine Thursday practice and should be involved in the mix on game day.
