Shrine Game: West Practice – Day Two

The Shrine Game has finished up day two and the West team turned in a great practice compared to yesterday with a lot accomplished and much more action from a live scrimmage standpoint as well as drills. The West team worked the players harder today and some of the players really showed out on day two.

OG Zach Johnson, North Dakota State – Zach Johnson is just a big nasty offensive linemen and he enjoyed a standout day in drills, one on ones and the scrimmage portions. He doesn’t appear to have great length but he has adequate size and strong hands but what shined today was a natural anchor against a variety of body types. He looked good pulling out and the guy just couldn’t be moved off his spot because he’s got a natural thick frame and well developed legs. He stood up 300+ pounders on the regular today and certainly proved he belongs with the rest of the division one competition here.

DE Avery Moss, Youngstown State – Moss has had some moments, he blew up a run play in the backfield early in the session and he beat Chase Roullier on an inside rip move. The guy has a high motor and has showcase not just the length to separate from blockers but the ability to run that L drill and bend around the corner on slower tackles. The Youngstown State product did get too far off edge on one rep, he opened up his chest to Storm Norton and was promptly thrown into the dirt but you certainly can’t question the effort. Moss has flashed both days and is off to a good start.

WR Billy Brown, Sheppard – This is a big bodied wide receiver. The weigh ins had him at 245 pounds and he looked all of it today but he does get that mass moving pretty well. There’s a possibility of a position change here but he did high point some footballs out there, he won in blocking and while he may not get a fast start, he did close in on the football the double move drill deep and has managed to get open in one on ones despite lacking top end speed. Could be a possession receiver but needs to prove he can consistently get open. Regardless, he had a solid day and certainly didn’t do anything to hurt himself.

OT Avery Gennesy, Texas A&M – Quite possibly the highest drafted player here, Gennesy looks the part with a long frame and he’s not sloppy. The guy definitely looks the part but he’s nothing close to a finished product here. He doesn’t have a smooth transition out of his stance and stands upright too much before firing into a defender. He has great feet and keeps driving through contact but hitting moving targets isn’t his forte. He got to the second level on a run today and whiffed on the linebacker in space. There appears to be a segmenting to his game that is concerning for a guy with the athletic gifts he has but nothing a solid coaching staff couldn’t work with. He definitely looks the part of a left tackle but these two days have been a bit of a mixed bag.

DE Deatrich Wise, Arkansas – Wise is a big bodied, long framed pass rusher that went out there today and won a lot of reps. His bull rush was stoned by Zach Johnson and he didn’t close the space on another edge rush but he showed the ability to redirect and used a rip move inside to beat Gavin Andrews, he hammered Sam Tevi down in one on ones and showed a knack for running that arch all day. He has the body build of a condor, high cut with a lot of leg and arms to his makeup. Wise could pan out as a situational pass rusher for a team in need of a rangy edge type that can cover a lot of ground with quickness.

DT Josh Augusta, Missouri – The B gaps have been occupied by August in running drills and in one on ones, this kid has been dominant. He weighed in at 375 pounds and appears to be a nose type with how well he transfers his natural power. I don’t know that he has any moves, I don’t know how fast he runs but I what we do know is that the man simply can’t be moved. He broke up run plays and outside of being the largest man here, he does something with it and has potential based on the planetary theory that there simply aren’t many like him out there.
