Shrine Game: West Practice – Day Three

The Shrine Game has now seen three full days of work and the West team put in probably their best practice, especially the west defensive line and the west runningbacks. There’s a lot of talent across the board on this roster and they got a lot of quality coaching up throughout these first three days. I have enjoyed watching runningbacks coach Jemal Singleton from the Colts working with the backs and the rapport he has developed with those three players.

WR Gabe Marks, Washington State – Marks is a short receiver with a slight build and very small hands but he keeps making catches and plays out here. He adjusts to the football so quickly and has the body control to not only keep his feet after the catch but he also doesn’t gear down changing directions. He sells his routes well, has terrific feet and could make a career out of the slot with his consistency catching the ball and making plays.

RB Elijah McGuire, Louisiana-Lafayette – McGuire was Mr Everything on offense during his career as a Ragin Cajun and he’s doing the same here. He spotted the backside of the play, put his foot in the ground and exploded up the field for a big run early in the day. He was smacking pads hard in runningback blocking drills, he caught the ball well and shows off a great overall skill set. McGuire would be an ideal player for a team in need of a satellite option that could also give you 10-15 carriers in any given game.

CB Aarion Penton, Missouri – I’m a big fan of what he’s done here. The kid can run, he can turn and shows great balance. He caught an interception in scrimmage yesterday but also showed sticky coverage today. He went against Austin Carr on a rep in seven on sevens and Carr pushed off, drew the flag but Penton still was able to recover and make a play on the football. He has short arms and he is just 5’9”⅜ but he plays bigger than he is and could thrive as a nickel corner.

WR Trey Griffey, Arizona – The infamous son of MLB star Ken Griffey Jr, Trey has quietly had a decent week and has a nice long frame for the position to go along with nice ball skills. He broke Treston DeCoud’s coverage in red zone work and adjusted for the pass in the corner of the endzone. He didn’t really play in a prolific passing offense or with an accomplished quarterback in college the last two years, so this format is a tremendous opportunity for Griffey to showcase some of the skills he has.

DT Ralph Green III, Indiana – The Hoosier big man has been a spark plug the entire week for the west team with his high volume talk and a motor to match. He never stopped talking today but he also never stopped bringing effort. He got what would have been a sack in drills and crushed another running play on the inside. Green has the size, strength and intensity needed to survive at the three technique.

TE Blake Jarwin, Oklahoma State – This guy is a nifty athlete that has movement skills, he catches the ball extremely well and some teams might try him as a long snapper. He made a diving grab early in practice today, he caught a sideline pass and took it upfield quickly. He can play a lot of positions and brings a lot of different tools to the table, so he’ll be an appealing selection at the end of the draft for teams looking for a one guy answer to fill two different position needs.

P Austin Rehkow, Idaho – The boot showed up big today. He was by no means better than Shrine Game legend Brian Anger, who is the best punter I’ve seen in any all star game but Rehkow certainly impressive. He had solid hang time and showed off some nice placement, putting the ball in the corners after he got warmed up. He definitely had one punt that appeared to be a 60 yarder right into the corner that nearly outkicked the return man. The Vandal enjoyed a solid day and could be a draftable level punter for a team that wants to lock the position down for the next few seasons.
