Senior Bowl: South Practice – Day Two

The south team has put two solid days in the books and their practice was highlighted by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams cussing up a storm, going off on his defensive players in his usual profanity laced tirades that have made him famous. The south team’s practice appeared to be disjunct and a bit repetitive but there were certainly some players that stood out and need to be mentioned.

TE Evan Engram, Ole Miss – Engram has a special blend of skills with his clean release, outstanding body control and exceptional ball skills. The Ole Miss product made a great fingertip catch on an underthrown Antonio Pipkin pass and he even looked good in blocking drills. He’s in a rare tight end class but he’s a very similar prospect to Jordan Reed with how well he runs routes and his understanding of coverages. He really brings some wide receiver skills to the table, he has the long frame that you need to separate and the speed that will present opposing secondaries with major issues.

WR Artavis Scott, Clemson – Artavis Scott is one of the stars of this event with his rare combination of change of direction, the stopping/starting ability that gives him that ability to make defenders miss and terrific ball skills. He has excellent balance and body control to go along with the top end speed to take any play the distance. He caught a short pass today, turned on a dime and exploded up the field. The guy is a speed merchant with chance to develop into a team’s idea slot receiver with the spring he has in his step.

DE Daeshon Hall, Texas A&M – Hall quietly has been a very productive player for the the Aggies and he’s taken that productivity with him to Mobile with a number of solid wins in one on ones. He beat Conor McDermott off edge in one on ones and he has spotted a run that blew up later in the day. He has good weight at 265 and great length with 34⅝“ arms but he really uses that length to separate from linemen, change directions, redirect and get the angle on his man. Hall is probably one of the more underrated players in this draft class.

WR Fred Ross, Mississippi State – Ross just kept hauling in passes today, as nearly every single time I looked up Ross was catching yet another ball. He illustrated whey he’s been such a receiving threat at College Station with his quickness in and out of breaks and his reliable ball skills. He locates the football quickly, he has the body control needed to make finite adjustments and outposition his man for the rights to the ball. Ross put a lot of good stuff out there today and should be able to build off of what was a solid day two.

S Rayshawn Jenkins, Miami – Jenkins looks the part with a rocked up physique, nice height at 6’1¼” and the acceleration to recover and break up a pass. He cut off a receiver on an out route, broke on the ball but dropped a would be pick only to let the receiver behind him make a play on the ball. Regardless of not finishing the play, his anticipatory mentality and starting ability really shows up at practice. He should be a quality back half defender at the next level with his blend of size and speed.

LB Tyus Bowser, Houston – Bowser was all over the field with a number of great reads in the scrimmage against the run, he diagnosed plays well out in coverage and showed off some real ability as a special teamer. He is a little rigid in build and form but he has adequate size, he dominated a few snaps in the linebackers vs runningbacks pass protection drill. Regardless of where Bowser gets drafted or where he goes, he’ll be a core special teamer and tackler that will make a team.
