Senior Bowl: North Practice Day Three

The practices at the Senior Bowl have concluded and the north team finished off their work first to begin day three. The weather was perfect for practice conditions Thursday unlike the forecast for Saturday and the players responded with their best session yet.

LIKED WHAT I SAW

OLB Komoko Turay, Rutgers – The Scarlet Knight has scattered production throughout his career (seven sacks in the last three years) but he really turned it on down here in Mobile with some great one on one reps, beating Brian O’Neill on an inside ripe move and he also beat Brett Toth in another rep with a side counter to toss Toth to the ground when he switch hands. Turay had an interception earlier in the week and has consistently brought it this week. He has rare bend, quality spring out of his stance and very active hands to keep himself clean from linemen. Turay is a wild card in this draft because you really don’t know what you’re getting in terms of career production but there’s no denying that Turay made money this week.

WR Justin Watson, Penn – The catch of the week was made today. Justin Watson of Penn ran a fade route to the right corner of the endzone in drills and beat Isaac Yiadom for a one handed grab just in bounds for a touchdown. Watson has the length and size needed to play at the next level but it’s his consistency and footwork that has stood out here in Mobile as well. Watson deserves a ton of credit for playing his tail off all week at the Shrine Game and then putting together another solid week here. Justin Watson is a draftable player that could be a fourth receiver that wins jump balls and finds ways to convert even on highly contested passes.

OG Will Hernandez, UTEP – There’s no questioning the talent coming in but he did some very impressive things on day three redirecting defenders and showing off his ability to hold his ground and stabilize pass rushers. He has heavy hands that shock pass rushers and his ability to recover and make up ground for his size is just flat out rare. He is a smart savvy physical player that won’t give up anything, he gets people moved and he’s got a perfectionist mentality when he takes the field. Whatever team selects Hernandez is getting a real professional that will be a fixture in the locker room and a tone setter up front right out of the gate.

DT BJ Hill, North Carolina State – There was a real embarrassment of riches for North Carolina State along the defensive line the last few years and while Bradley Chubb may grab most of the headlines, Hill was one of the most competitive and physical players here. He has raw power and explosion that are ideal for the position but he also possesses the ability to rush the passer from the interior. Hill will find himself getting drafted at some point on the second day of the draft by a team that runs an even front looking for a real impact player that is capable of hitting the ground running. BJ Hill is a definite money maker this week and should benefit from his trip down south.
